Hi Owl class

I hope to see lots of you on Tuesday for our farewell picnic! It is on Tuesday from 1.15 to 2.45.  Mrs Chalkley is kindly making food for us so don’t eat too much lunch!!!! Come around to the large gates that will take you onto the playground past the reception playground. Please also bring back any unused books that you have.

Well done for your work last week – it was good to see some hand-written work being sent in.

As promised – this is the email with your work for this week.  If you feel like to you need more work to do – try the Oak National Academy lessons on Foundation subjects and English.  Any work completed and emailed to me, I will mark and give you feedback on.

Maths

I have set 3 maths tasks for you all on Purple Mash – for one of them, you need to choose the appropriate level of challenge; the other two are number work.

As can be seen on the leaflet for this week, we are staying with using The Oak National Academy website.  This week’s focus is on “Coordinates and Shapes”.

The link is below and you should be starting on lesson 1 this week of the new topic, for your year group, working on one lesson a day. If you did not do them last week – just start on lesson 1 – it is important to complete them in order.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/year-groups/

You need to:

  1. Follow the above link
  2. Click on your year group
  3. Click on the green subjects box
  4. Click on the maths box
  5. Begin lesson

Remember to use TTRockStars to keep up those times tables skills.

You might also prefer to keep working through the books.  Email me to let me know how you get on and any issues you come across.

Reading

Following last week’s success with reading on Purple Mash, I have set the final chapters for you.

Over the week you need to:

  1. read the final chapters
  2. Complete the associated activities (they do not take long!)
  3. Work on the writing task linked to it – this you can do Purple Mash OR as a power point, word or on paper and email it in as before.

Any issues – let me know – but once you have a look it is really straight forwards.  If you are not able to access any of it – don’t forget you still have the books with reading tasks in!

Writing

The topic for the last week is still “Time Tunnel”. You should choose a famous person from history and then:

  • write a diary entry for you chosen person from history – one day out of their life.

  • Write a fact file for your chosen person – how much can you find out about them?

See the leaflet for the requirements for the activities.  They do need to be completed by hand to ensure that writing skills are being practised.  Email your finished work in and it will be marked.

I have also added a Purple Mash grammar task for all of you.

Books

Continue to use the books – a little of each one, each day – not all in one go!

The library reading scheme is up and running again for the summer – it is easy to access online this year.  The link is below if you would like to sign up.

INFORMATION BELOW FOR W/C 25.5.20

Hi year 6,

Another week has gone by and more great work by you all.  I love reading your work and seeing your scores on various quizzes and games on Purple Mash.  Some of you email work in too, which I love to see!

Next week (week commencing 25.5.20) there is no home learning.  However, I have organised for there to be a Year 6 leavers book, as there has been for the past few years, and I need some help from you all.

LEAVERS BOOK

  1. PHOTOS

I have found some photos – so I am sorted for a few of those.  However, I could do with a few more so if each of you could send in one photo – your choice – it could even be a baby one!!!  Email it into the owl’s email account and I can sort it from there.

  1. WRITING SECTION

You need to write a short (I’ll tell you how much for each section) piece with different headings:

  1. About me – what do you like (food, hobbies, games, how do your friends describe you etc)

At least 2 sentences

  1. Favourite memory of school – doesn’t have to be this year – a trip, memory, lesson, performance etc

This can be as long or short as you would like but a minimum of 3 sentences

  1. What you would like to be when you grow up and why

2 or 3 sentences

  1. Things I enjoyed learning about – any year group

At least 2 sentences

  1. BACKGROUND

You also need to choose a background.  I have screen shot the options and put them below.  You need to let me know the letter and number coordinate and the page number.  For example – page 2, B4.  I wouldn’t choose one with too strong or big a picture, as the boxes with photos and writing go on the top.  I have included a sample page from last year and the template we are working with for this year so you can see what we are aiming for and working with!!!

 See below for the pictures.

27.4.20

Hi Owl class

I received some amazing work last week – I am really impressed and have shared it all on the Year 6 web page on the website.

As promised – this is the email with your work for this week.

Maths work

I have set 3 maths tasks for you all on Purple Mash – for two of them, you need to choose the appropriate level of challenge.  Remember to “hand in” when you have finished.  Let me know how you get on!

Books

Continue to use the books – a little of each one, each day – not all in one go!

Reading

Make sure you work on some reading comprehension.  The books should support you with this.

Times Tables

Log onto Times Table Rock Stars and practise your multiplication skills.

Written Work

Consider the positive and negative changes of coasts on humans, animals and/or plants

Your written piece for the week is to consider how changing coastlines affect humans and wildlife.  You don’t have to address all of the above – you could just consider some the elements – eg just animals.

Coastlines are ever-changing through the effects of erosion and deposition caused by the waves and tides. These slow changes have created a varied and dramatic coastline in the UK and provide many tourist destinations.  These interesting features are often seen as positives for the area as they draw people to the area. They also provide unique environments for plants, animals and birds.

However, if the sea is eroding the coastline – there can be an issue for the people that live there – they might lose their homes or businesses and the season and weather might be an issue for them. For plants and animals, the changing environment might affect their requirements leading to them leaving the area or it might attract new species.

Some examples of this are:

  • Coastal erosion at Holderness, East Yorkshire
  • Floods in Norfolk
  • Tidal surge on the east coast
  • Dawlish railway washed away in 2014

I would like you to produce a piece of written work about coastal erosion’s impact on humans and or plants and animals.

It is up to you how to present it – newpaper article, power point, word document, a poster, information report etc.  Remember, there is only 1 piece a week, so make it high quality.  This piece of work is to emailed back into me, via the owls@holwell.herts.sch.uk email address. Great work I can share on the Year 6 web page.

Contacting Mrs Adams

There is the Blog page on Purple Mash – sharing tab – shared blogs

You can also send me a hello email!

Remember if I don’t see you log on to one of the programmes or receive an email – I will be making contact with you – just to check you are ok!

If you need any help with anything – please contact me.  I will have the email account every day, so should be able to get back to you fairly promptly!

Take care and stay safe

WORK BELOW FROM W/C 20.4.20

Looking at the features of coasts and where you might find them.

Work below from Lacey.  Well done!

Ally's work on features of coasts.

Edward's power point on the features of coasts.

Marcu's work on the Geographical features of a coast.

Great work below from Ben.

More great work here. A poster from Courtney, Fiona used an overlay technique to explain the features on the photo and a poster from Max - can you spot him?!

Great work here from Jaden, Jake and Jessica - this is just the sort of thing I was hoping to see; posters clearly showing the features of coasts with lots of details.  Well done!

Hi

So this would be the start of the Summer Term now!  I hope you are all keeping well.   I am sending an email out on Monday to detail the work for this week.  There will be some maths to complete on Purple Mash and you can continue to log into Times Table Rock Stars to keep your multiplication skills up to date.  Reading and Grammar can be practised using the books I sent home.  There will also be a writing / research task to complete and send in to me.

Axel Scheffler (the illustrator for The Gruffalo) has released a book on the Coronavirus which might be worth a look:   https://nosycrowcoronavirus.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/Coronavirus_ABookForChildren.pdf

If I do not see you logging into one of the sites or emailing me (even it is just to say Hi!) I will be phoning at the end of the week to make sure everything is OK and if you need any help with anything.

The email address is Owls@holwell.herts.sch.uk  and I check it regularly.

Keep Safe

Mrs Adams

Hi

It is the start of the Easter Holidays.  Just a few notes - please make sure you have "handed in" your work on Purple Mash to show me that it is finished and I can then mark it.  Also - if you go into Purple Mash and click on the "sharing" tab and then the "shared blogs" tab you can leave me or the rest of the class a message and we can reply.

Keep safe

Mrs Adams

Hi

There have been a few concerns over Purple Mash.  Do not worry about completing all the Purple Mash tasks and sometimes the tasks don't work due to technical difficulties.  We are looking at setting up a blog style page on Purple Mash over the next few days which will allow us to message each other within our class.

Over Easter - ease off the work a bit!  Set yourself some different style challenges - I am still working on my skipping - I would love to be able to skip like a boxer!  I am going to plant some seeds at the weekend - hopefully I will then get some vegetables later in the year! Enjoy the dry weather and stay safe.  Miss you all!

Mrs Adams

Morning!  Week 2 now up and running.

Hope you are all keeping safe and managing some work, some exercise and some fun!  I have joined Joe Wickes a few times - my legs now ache!

I have a set of quizzes which test your general knowledge!  You can ask family members or look the answers up if you are not sure.  The answers come the following day,

See how you get on!

Hi Year 6 - Mrs Adams here!

Even though we are not allowed outside too much, I hope you are enjoying the sunshine this week.  Finally, I have got to grips with Purple Mash and have set some work.  I will do my best to reply and look at the work you complete and send in.

You also have the workbooks to use.  Don't do too much in one go - a page or two from each book at a time.  Little and often works well.

A really useful life skill is being able to type properly.  I learned many years ago how to touch type (I am definitely not an expert but I can use all my fingers!).  This is the programme I used - it is great fun - especially if you have the sound on!  I have attached the link below to Dance Mat Typing on the BBC Bitesize.

Stay safe - thinking of you all.

Please check back here on Monday for updates of work for the week.

Coming to terms with the school closure.

Hello Year 6 parents and children,

Now that the Government has signalled the closure of schools from the end of this week these pages will be updated with work and activities for children to complete during the time the school is closed.

The children have been sent home a pack of booklets to work through during the closure.  Please contact the school about arrangements to collect yours if you are currently not attending.

You can find a list of useful websites below on this page and it has also been uploaded onto the school closure - general information page. This could help you extend your child's learning further.

As well as the work provided we expect you to still be using Times Tables Rockstars to help your child practice their multiplication skills and to be maintaining regular reading at home. This could be a good opportunity for your child to  practice their reading skills and grow in confidence in their ability.

Thank you

The Year 6 Team
