Pastoral Provision at Holwell Primary School

At Holwell Primary  school, pastoral support is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, valued, and understood, so we work hard to create an environment where every pupil feels supported emotionally as well as academically. Our pastoral approach helps children navigate the social and emotional challenges of primary school and the wider world, whether they are developing friendships, building confidence, or coping with worries. By nurturing their wellbeing, we enable pupils to develop resilience, positive relationships, and a genuine love of learning. When children feel secure and cared for, they are better able to engage in lessons, behave positively, and reach their full potential. Pastoral care is not an add-on for us—it is a fundamental part of helping every child thrive in school and beyond.

E.L.S.A Sessions
Emotional Literacy Support in schools plays an essential role in helping children understand and manage their feelings so they can learn and interact positively. Through structured sessions led by trained adults—often ELSA practitioners—pupils are given a safe, supportive space to explore emotions, develop coping strategies, and build confidence. This support helps children recognise their feelings, communicate effectively, and handle challenges such as anxiety, friendships, or changes at home. By strengthening emotional resilience and self‑regulation, Emotional Literacy Support not only improves wellbeing but also enhances pupils’ readiness to learn, their behaviour, and their overall success in school.

Learning Mentor Support
A learning mentor plays a vital role in supporting children’s social, emotional, and academic development within a school. They work closely with pupils who may face barriers to learning—such as low confidence, friendship difficulties, behavioural challenges, or external worries—and provide targeted, compassionate support to help them thrive. Learning mentors build trusting relationships with pupils, offering a safe space to talk, reflect, and develop strategies for managing their emotions and improving their focus in class. They also collaborate with teachers, parents, and external agencies to ensure each child receives consistent and tailored support. By helping pupils develop resilience, motivation, and positive learning habits, learning mentors contribute significantly to improving wellbeing, attendance, and overall academic progress.
